Personal Success – 3 Easy Steps to Attainable Goals

Steps in nature

We’ve previously discussed “SMART” and “DUMB” goal setting, which are great frameworks for creating achievable and inspiring goals. Even so, if you are impatient to get going (I know the feeling!) and are looking for a quick start to goal setting, here it is!

Just 3 steps, and you are on your way…

1.) Evaluate Where You Are: As the old saying goes, you can’t know where you are going until you know where you’ve been. Personal success goes hand in hand with regular evaluation. While we are talking mainly about business goals, this evaluation process can be used in all aspects of your life.

Start by considering whether you are happy in your current situation. If not, look back and determine when you stopped loving your business. Was it always this way or did a particular event seem to trigger the change? Maybe you gradually shifted the focus of your business over time and are no longer aligned with your core values.

2.) Determine Where You Want To Go: Once you know where you are, you need to figure out where you are going. What is your desired outcome? Specifically, what are your desired results?

This step is the meat of goal setting. Refer to my SMART goals article for a more in-depth review of what criteria should be used when creating goals. However, the short version is that you should have goals that are specific and easily measurable.

An easy way to help with the goal setting process is to visualize where you want to be in 3 months, 1 year and 5 years. How do you envision your business operating? How does it impact your life? What do you see yourself doing? Consider these questions and determine your goals based upon the outcomes you see in your future.

3.) Create a Roadmap To Get There: So you know where you are and where you want to go. Now, you just need to figure out how to get there.

This is the step that often comes in the way of personal success. Many of my clients have difficulty determining the steps needed to go from Point A to Point B. Don’t feel bad if you have the same problem.

For example, if your goal is to quit your current job and transition to self-employment within a year, obviously you need to earn more money. But how do you do that? Well, you need to create a series of small steps that can be easily achieved. You could commit to spending 10 hours a week on your business. Or send out two new advertising mailings. Or contact 5 previous customers each month to ask for referrals or repeat business.

You see the pattern? These are all well-defined steps that can bring you closer to your ultimate goal of earning more money and reaching economic freedom. Avoid steps such as making X amount of dollars in a month. As a goal, that works. But as a step to a goal, it doesn’t fly. You’ll wake up every morning scratching your head about how to make that happen.

I can’t stress enough how important goal setting is to personal success. If you need help creating and setting goals, a business coach may be able to help. Being able to bounce ideas and brainstorm with a professional that has a proven track record can help focus your efforts and avoid wasted time.

Let’s get the creative juices flowing here! What are your hopes and dreams for your business? Share where you are at and see if other readers can help you figure out the steps needed for personal success.

Enlightening article, my friend! A great thinker once observed: “Success is goals and all else is commentary.”
